So, What have I Worked On?
CHICAGO
Follow Spot
As the spotlight operator for the production of Chicago, my primary responsibilities included operating the spotlight during performances and ensuring that the lighting was functioning properly. I also had to follow safety protocols due to the fact that the spotlight could get incredibly hot.
During the production, I operated the spotlight from the back of the theatre, following cues from the director and the stage manager that i had printed. I had to pay close attention to the action on stage and adjust the spotlight accordingly to highlight the performers. I also had to troubleshoot any technical issues that arose such as the levers to focus the spotlight could get stuck and heat up quite easily. To combat this whenever the spotlight was not in use I made sure to turn it off and re-adjust the focusing lever. This would ensure that the light wouldn't get too hot and that the lever wouldn't get too heated or stuck. I also ensured that noting was left on top of, or stuck to the light, as this would be a fire hazard.
Overall, my experience as a spotlight operator during the production of Chicago was a challenging but rewarding one. I gained valuable experience in technical theatre and developed my skills in operating lighting equipment and following safety protocols. The main safety issue I had to be aware of was the risk of burns from the hot spotlight, but I was able to mitigate this risk through careful handling and following safety procedures.
SWEENY TODD
Deputy Stage Manager
(DSM)
As DSM for the production, my main duty was to ensure effective communication between the tech crew backstage and those at the desks. I was also responsible for maintaining communication with the script and giving cues. Despite being given limited time to put together the tech for a show of its size, I believe I performed this role effectively.
There were a few issues that arose during the course of the show, including an accidental spilling of a drink on stage and synchronization issues between sound and lighting at the desk. However, I made sure to promptly address and resolve these issues in a way that minimized disruption to the audience. Overall, I believe I demonstrated strong problem-solving and communication skills in my role as DSM.
