JOE JAMES
Technical Theatre
ABOUT ME
My passion for working in the theatre and entertainment industry has increased throughout my studies and it makes me happy to see my creative side come to life. I love working with performers, producers and directors of all kinds and I believe that my passion is creativity. While I am not by any means exceptional at performing, I believe that my ability to do this fairly decently helps immensely in creating good theatre. Whether it be skills in set design, prop making, sound or lighting.
I have some experience of voice over work, editing, sound design and radio work on personal projects and with friends. I have picked up quite a bit of experience from these opportunities, especially skills relating to working well in a team of people and the technical knowledge associated with the radio and theatre spaces. I've also had some experience in photography having helped friends with projects and modelling portfolios. I believe the thing that sets me apart from my competition is my ability to be above average in so many different skills, I am by no means an expert in most of them, but I hope get a more versatile set of skills in the industry but also help me obtain mastery of them. Working in an industry offering diversity, challenges and variety is something that drives me to succeed. I enjoy the challenge of working outside my comfort zone. I love the processes of stage management, prop making, stage design and various other more widely used in other fields such as CAD and sound design. I have demonstrated these in my work on an internet radio show, sound design on a virtual reality experience, set design for an online theatre production and through some short film work. I have previously used software such as Audacity, Logic Pro X, Qlab, Capture and LXFree, as well as a very rudimentary understanding of ETC Nomad.
While doing my role at Sue Townsend Theatre it is important for me to be punctual and organised. I take pride in my ability to do this role to a high standard. For my work on the ensemble Christmas show, it was my job to manage performers. I worked with dance groups, musical theatre groups , and acting groups all doing intertwined scenes. This was a very enjoyable challenge as I was in charge of props, space backstage and performers. Sue Townsend theatre is owned by Leicester college and allows students (especially tech theatre students as we are in the space most often) to get experience working in a real theatre environment. It is the students that do all the tech for the shows and so we get lots of experience. In my two year course there were four students. We all had to learn stage management, lighting design and technology, sound design plus set and prop making skills. As for the most part it is the students running all the tech for the shows, it is quite a high stress, high reward environment. During my time working at this theatre another tech student and I took it upon ourselves to organise and sort the props cupboard. For this task we stayed overtime until closing most days and compiled a props list containing over eight hundred items with images and area of the room for each. This provided additional efficiency for future shows.
Given the opportunity, I will work the hardest and I will put in the most hours to achieve my goals.
